The Royal Palace and Fort is the dominant factor in Mandalay's layout measuring 3.2 x 3.2 kilometres. King Mindon Min had it built in 1857. To me, the compound itself is impressive but most materials are very basic and the state in which the individual buildings are show a lack of maintenance. Compared to the Royal Palace in Phnom Penh in Cambodia, also a poor country, this palace can not stand in its shadow.
The watchtower gives a nice birds-eye view.
Exciting is the small museum in the back showing live images of important ministers and generals, several objects the kings used and the famous glass bed from the French king.
